In pictures she is often seen as standing on Lord Shiva in the terrifying surrounding of shamshan (cremation ground). Black color of Kali represents the seed stage of all colors and Tamo Guna (Destruction). Devi Kali was originating from nothingness and her sadhna leads to nothingness or the absolute one "the brahman".
